I’ve been thinking about big names that have gone down in history…you know- those people that REALLY did something. Not people whose names are big because they got on television just for allowing a film crew to record them while they are drunk. Not those people.
I am talking: Individuals who are remembered for accomplishing something. What set them apart? Why them?
Rosa Parks- the only person I know of to go down in history for sitting on a bus while making an awesome statement about equality.
King Leonidas- the only person known for LOOSING a battle.
Abe Lincoln- Rocking the Robust Beard (within in the heart of political and social turmoil) since 1860
JK Rowling- Wrote one of the highest grossing book series on coffee shop napkins
This list goes on and you get the point. Big Names. Big Accomplishments.
Here’s a few things all heroes like these have in common: a difficult circumstance and relentless determination. That’s it, people. That’s the answer for me. And not just in my health and fitness goals, but in life. It is people who determine what they want, and become relentless in their pursuit of it who succeed.
Okay, I am pretty sure I will not go down in history for losing 15 pounds and improving my body fat percentage. And I am not saying all of us have to be written into the history books for something huge. No one would want to read that book; it would be so interesting that it would become completely boring. The point then? What happened to our determination to accomplish something? What happened to setting our minds and overcoming obstacles like heroes do in history?
Is it just me or are too many people saying, “I wish…” instead of “I will…”
Maybe our difficult circumstance isn’t facing the Persian army like King Leonidas did…which is why our story won’t be told hundreds of years from now. But that doesn’t mean we don’t feel like we are facing the Persian army sometimes.
What is your obstacle right now? What is keeping you from a goal? Have you determined to overcome it or are you ignoring your obstacles in hopes they will someday disappear? Are you saying, “I will do this!” or is it a shrug and a “I would like to do that someday…” ?
I became more determined this September with many aspects of my life. I realized that I am not where I want to be. There were things I wanted to accomplish not only with my health but other goals, resolutions from the year 2005 that are left undone.
It is time that I set my mind and stop allowing it to waver!
So, what have I done? I have lost 8lbs, my clothes are totally getting loose, and I went on a hike ahead of the group instead of dragging behind. I was annoyed at first, not thinking it was enough. And then I saw the above picture of what 5lbs of fat looks like. Now I believe I need to be patting myself on the back more! I am doing things daily to reach my goals, I may not reach them in the time frame I set for myself… but if you don’t care then I don’t care.
So the September lesson?
Stop saying “I would like to”…and just start saying “I AM doing…”.
Recognize your progress, no matter how small! It’s okay to feel good about little accomplishments AND big ones!
